Halloween is a fun time of year for kids of all ages… but it can be a “nightmare” waiting to happen if patients are damaging appliances when eating the wrong treats.

At Total Orthodontics we love Halloween!! However, we feel it is important to educate parents and patients of the potential problems that can occur if orthodontic patients don’t pay attention to our foods to avoid list.

This year the American Association of Orthodontics (AAO) is offering FIVE TIMELY TIPS to protect braces, aligners and other orthodontic “appliances” while also protecting teeth from decay.

  1. My nephew absolutely loves Halloween but he just got braces on last month. He was so worried that he wouldn’t be able to eat his trick-or-treating candy. We have been looking up ways he can still enjoy his favorite holiday. I’m glad to hear that it is okay for him to still eat soft chocolate and peanut butter cups. Those are actually his favorite. It’s good to know to try and avoid hard candy or chewy candy. I’ll make sure to let him know. He’ll be excited. Thanks for the info!

  2. No matter how many times I have my kid talk to the orthodontist, she just doesn’t seem to care about taking care of her braces! I’m constantly having to remind her not to eat sticky foods and stuff. I like tip number 3, about brushing to avoid cavities. Maybe I need to explain to my daughter the real possibility of cavities if she doesn’t take good care of her mouth.

  3. My daughter has braces and I know will want to eat a ton of candy for her birthday. We asked her orthodontist what is okay to eat and luckily it matches with your info. Although she shouldn’t eat hard treats, she will be pleased to know she can eat soft chocolates. Even her orthodontist gave her a peanut butter cup for her birthday!

  4. Three of my kids have braces and they just asked me if they could still eat candy. I know it isn’t a crime, but I know that there are certain sugars to stay away from. I’m glad to hear chocolate is still in the safe circle. What would you say about hard candies if you suck on them? I might want to take some of these things to an orthodontist.
