Retainers After Braces or Aligners: What You Need to Know
What Is a Retainer and Why Do You Need One?
A retainer is a custom-made appliance that helps keep your teeth in their new positions after braces or aligners. Think of it as the tool that “locks in” your beautiful results while your teeth settle into place.
Here’s why retainers are so important:
- They prevent your teeth from shifting back to where they started.
- They give your bone and gum tissue time to adapt to the new alignment.
- They help protect the investment you made in your smile.
- They maintain the straight, confident look you worked so hard for.
Skipping your retainer can cause your teeth to shift, undoing all the time and effort you put into treatment—definitely something you want to avoid!
Types of Retainers: What Are Your Options?
Your orthodontist will help you choose the right type of retainer for your needs. Here are the most common kinds:
1. Hawley Retainers
- Made of acrylic and metal wire
- Sturdy and adjustable
- Can be customized with fun colors
- A bit more noticeable when worn
2. Clear Retainers (Essix or Vivera)
- Made of clear plastic, like Invisalign trays
- Nearly invisible and less bulky
- Snug fit over your teeth
- Not adjustable but discreet
3. Fixed (Bonded) Retainers
- A thin wire attached behind your front teeth
- Stays in place all the time (you can’t remove it)
- Great for keeping teeth stable long-term
- Completely hidden from view
Sometimes a combination of removable and fixed retainers is recommended, especially if certain teeth are more likely to move.
How Often Should You Wear Your Retainers after Braces?
The First Few Months (0–6 Months Post-Treatment)
- Wear your retainer 20–22 hours a day
- Only remove it for eating, drinking (except water), and brushing
- Consistency is key during this time!
Long-Term Maintenance
- After the first few months, you’ll likely switch to nighttime wear
- Your orthodontist might recommend a few nights a week—or nightly wear indefinitely
- Many people continue wearing their retainer long-term to keep their smile looking great
Always follow your orthodontist’s specific instructions—they’ll tailor the plan to your teeth.
Retainer Care Tips
Storage
- Always store your retainer in its case when not in use
- Don’t wrap it in a napkin—it’s too easy to throw away by accident!
- Avoid heat (like hot cars or dishwashers) that can warp it
- Label your case with your name just in case it gets lost
Cleaning
For removable retainers:
- Rinse with cool water and brush gently using a soft toothbrush
- Use mild soap or retainer cleaner—avoid toothpaste (it can scratch!)
- Deep clean occasionally with special tablets
For fixed retainers:
- Brush carefully around the wire after meals
- Use floss threaders or small brushes to clean underneath
- A water flosser can help keep everything extra clean
When Should You Replace Your Retainer?
Retainers wear out over time, so keep an eye out for:
- A loose or tight fit
- Cracks, holes, or visible damage
- Persistent odors or discoloration
General guideline:
- Replace removable retainers every 1–3 years, depending on use
- For Invisalign Vivera retainers, switch to a new set about every 6 months
Quick Reminders to Keep Your Retainer in Great Shape
- Avoid heat—don’t leave it in a hot car or near heaters
- Bring it to your appointments—your orthodontist can check if it’s still doing its job
- Call your orthodontist right away if it’s lost, broken, or just not fitting right
